INDIAN FRY BREAD

Traditional Native American delicacy made with bread, topped with hamburger, lettuce and sour cream. This simple recipe is not just super tasty, but also healthy too and is an excellent dessert to enjoy with honey butter and powdered sugar.

Also known as Indian Fry Bread, Navajo Fry Bread, Navajo Tacos, and Scones in certain places, this recipe is a Native American snack that has gained popularity throughout Western united States. The dough for this recipe is really easy to make. But underneath all that simplicity is a really tasty fry bread that any and every one would surely love. The insides are really soft and fluffy, and the outsides are crunchy, giving you a cracky delight as you enjoy it. It’s typically served as Navajo Tacos, which include all of your favorite taco fixings. You could also serve it as a dessert with honey butter and powdered sugar. I bet you’ll feel like you’re in heaven!

Ingredients

Bread:

2 cup of flour

¾ tsp. salt

3 tsp. baking powder

1 cup of warm water

Topping:

2 cup of pinto beans soaked overnight

1 lb. hamburger

Lettuce

Sour cream

Tomatoes

Cooking Instructions

Bread:

Step 1:

In a mixing bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and add warm water, mix with your hands until it forms, leave it for 5 minutes. Then break the dough into small balls.

Step 2:

Roll the dough into half an inch thick circles that are about 6 inches in diameter. Then fry each piece in a medium sauce pan with hot oil, turning each side until it is golden and drain on a paper towel and set aside.

Topping:

Step 3:

In a crockpot, place soaked beans and cover with water. Allow to cook on low for 4-6 hours or until it is tender. Two hours before the beans are done, add the chopped bacon about 2-3 slices of chopped bacon.

Step 4:

Cook 1 lb. of hamburger. Once beans are done, add in hamburger and spread beans over with your desired toppings. Serve and enjoy!

Tips

  • Fry bread is best served immediately out of the fryer. It’s not a good idea to fry them in advance.
  • However, you can make the dough ahead of time if you wish. Place it in a plastic wrap and cover tightly then store in the refrigerator overnight. When it’s time to prepare, set in on the counter to warm up, then proceed with the directions.
